In NYC, Every Dog May Have its Day

A couple of weeks ago, the New York City Council introduced a bill to allow pet-owning employees to use their paid sick leave to care for their animals. Currently, earned sick time may be used for personal health needs, to care for sick family member, to seek services assisting victims of domestic violence or in a public emergency.

The proposed bill would cover a service animal or an “animal kept primarily for companionship in compliance with all applicable laws.” (Sorry alligator owners.) Use of  accrued sick leave for pets follows the same requirements under the law regarding accrual, notice, and documentation.

TAKEAWAYS: The bill is intended to address the City’s mental health crisis and is part of a larger trend to expand the need for more inclusive leave policies. NYC would be the first to mandate paid pet leave but it will not be the last. Some companies already offer this benefit, and “Pawternity leave” as a way to boost morale and retention.

NYC clients–you will need to update your leave policies and inform your HR staff if the bill passes. We can help.
