Real Performance Reviews Are Good for Business

Sigh. Performance reviews are so misunderstood. We frequently hear from employers desperate to terminate an employee but they have excellent reviews. Why? Most employee reviews are like olives: they start with large. Why not give a good review to make life easier in the workplace? Because it will make life much harder in the long run. We published an excellent Newsletter last month with tips for conducting performance reviews.

Here are 3 Quick Reasons to Conduct Accurate, Thorough Performance Reviews:

  1. Performance reviews are an excellent opportunity to understand your workplace. Jobs change over time and with different people in those jobs. Employee reviews can provide insight into who is doing what (and an excellent time to update job descriptions!). You might find ways to play to your employees’ strengths and move duties around.
  2. Document much? Yes, we always advise your to document but we do not mean only discipline and incidents.Well thought out performance reviews are every bit as important–maybe more so–in making changes to your workplace.
  3. An honest assessment of performance is the best practice for you and your employees. Many times, an employee needs to know or be reminded of expectations and job duties. This is the time for that. Working with employees and avoiding turnover makes good sense for your workplace.
